Up to now most theme Authors have based their work on the Classic or Modern Themes packaged with Mozilla. While these are excellent starting points there are some disadvantages. Classic and Modern are fairly complex themes and present a steep learning curve to the novice theme author. The more advanced theme writers often have to remove features they don't want or modify sections just to add a new feature. Differences between Classic and Modern create problems for developers who are trying to create theming tools, often forcing them to only support Modern or Classic.
The Basic Theme project was created to address these problems. Our goal is to create a new theme that is designed as a starting point for theme authors and as a resource for developers working on theming tools.
