| Sky Pilot Classic is a theme commemorating Charles Lindbergh and the "Spirit of St. Louis" and is a portation of the original Netscape 6.1 Sky Pilot theme designed and authored by Kevin Cunningham, aka. kang. It uses a unique blend of purple and gray hues in combination with vivid and striking multi-colored icons which seems to beckon one to explore the full features of the browser and its various components. Additional information on Charles Lindbergh and other milestones in flight may be found at, http://www.nasm.si.edu/galleries/gal100/gal100.html | |||||

Thanks all, I'm pleased you find using this theme as fun as I have.
Max, Skypilot is certainly a resource consumptive Theme. Kang never found a widget he didn't want to style nor an area where an image gradient wasn't better than using a background color. I've attempted to retain every rendering style he used since it is but one of the things that make this theme what it is, imo.

looks nice, Sailfish!
hey, i'm working (playing around more like) on something, http://www.coda.co.za/pics/misc/mozskin.gif, haven't found any moz skinning documentation yet except the NS docs which I think might be outdated? Correct me here... Anyway, skinning tut would be good so I know the limitations. Initial feedback appreciated guys. (yeah, I am working with the Modern theme as a base, I know... ) ;)

Hello coda, no, the existing documentation for theme development is majorly outdated as of this post. I've had a couple of requests to provide a "How I Did It" tutorial and if I ever get this theme finished, I may consider doing it.

Coda, looks nice. When I first saw it I thought it was just a recolored version of Modern. Might I suggest after finishing it you do create something akin to a "Sandy Modern" where its just a recolored version of modern.

So don't those Netscape 6 themes work in Mozilla RC3? I could port them, I think anyone could - but I prefer doing something original. Caspy7, wouldn't it be cool if Moz came with a theme switcher like Winamp 3 Beta ?! If you're not familiar with it, you can change the HUE (primary colour filter) of the skin to anything you want. Very awesome. :D I'll keep working at my skin, yeah I did use Modern as a base but I plan to customize it all. Will get there eventually.

Pasha, at present, theme creation tools are pretty rudimentary and arcane. Basically, a zip/unzip utility (for the jar files), a text editor (for the jar file style sheets), a photo editor (for the images) and, finally, heavy research into XUL using sources at mozilla.org and xulplanet.com.
Good luck.
PS, the comment above was from me, I neglected to fill in the "Your name:" box.

Excellent work! Few bug/comment/feature: - in Mail/News, the throbber is not vertically centered - in the right panels of the pref window, the background is divided into two fixed size regions: dark and light grey. I agree that it is consistent for all the panels, but looking at individual panel, it looks like a bug (internet search, history etc...) I think the dark part should fit all the option aeras or only the first option. - the status messages (in the status bar) are white. I can not read them. I suggest they should be black - for mail/news, the left panel including the accounts and folders has a dark blue background. For me, it's a blocker, since I can not read the black names. I suggest for consistency that the background should be cyan as the left panel of the adressbook. - Mail/News: the header of the displayed message is pink. this color is not used elsewhere. I think using an already used color would increase the consistency. - Mail/News: when selecting a labeled message, the color information is lost (always black) - favicon in the URL bar has a 0px padding. 1px should be better. - no hover effect on the bookmark items in the personal toolbar (I like very much the hover on the home button) - the menu buttons in the menubar should imho be one pixel wider at the bottom, so that the _ for accesskey will be surrounded by the blue background. - very very minor, but since I am reporting all I am seeing: look at the 'Sidebar Tabs x' header in the sidebar. at the top right corner, the top most horizontal line ends up to the grippy on the right and should not if we want to have a well defined corner.
Other than that, that's great!!! I'll keep reporting bugs when I see them.

pch, first, thanks for taking the time to scrutinize the layout in detail. I'll log each of your suggestions into the Bug List for future consideration. Also, some of what you've requested (like the removal of dark purple background in folder pane) would be a User Interface change from the original design which I've tried to be careful not to do. However, if enough people believe this (and other) original design aspects need changing, I'll certainly take that into consideration.
Again, thanks for fine-tooth-comb review.

- [30] Submitted by: Sailfish on Monday June 3rd 2002

Shark Daddy, it may be because the other theme doesn't have a skin for chatzilla, in which case, Mozilla will keep the last skinned chatzilla stuff (in this case, Sky Pilot) or that's how I understand it.

However, I have some comments to do:
* I agree with pch's suggestions
* I'd like to see the site icon in tabs
* The loading animation looks good in sidebar, but looks terribly bad in tabs
* I don't like the checked check box
* I find the radio buttons are too unflat

All:
Several of you have taken the time to provide feedback on this theme in the form of change requests and for taking that time, I thank you. However, while you may still do that here, I'd prefer you also send it to my email address as well. That way I am able to contact you if I need clarification on a item you're reporting.
Also, I plan to add a Mission Statement to my site eventually but allow me to provide a quick and dirty outline of it here for your review.
Mission Statement
The Sky Pilot theme is the design creation of Kevin Cunningham, also known as, kang. In porting his theme to these later releases, I've attempted NOT to claim ownership of it but rather something akin to a caretaker. As such, I've taken extra precautions to keep to the original look/feel of this theme since I've included kang's name in the author title and in the theme-list picture.
I am not in communication with kang so any changes I make that diverge from the original design stands the chance of offending him such that he may not want his name associated with this portation. This would be very unfortuneate if it were to occur since he should continue to be acknowledged as the designer of this theme, imo.
It is my continued hope that the rightful creator of this theme will eventually decide to reclaim ownership of it and move it into, perhaps, newer and more interesting directions. In order to keep that hope alive, I've decided to be very cautious on making look/feel changes.
However, there are instances where changes are warranted, e.g., tabs but even there, I've attempted to design them based on other elements that were part of the original design (communicator tabs.) Also, where the original design may have caused confusion (one of pch's reports, for instance) I've decided to make the change; however, most changes are either due to lack of similar functionality in the later releases of Mozilla or cosmetic in order to make a particular section more clear.
Again, thank you all for taking the time to comment on this theme and I hope you continue to enjoy using it as much as I do....

Bob, I had to make some difficult binding changes (for me, at least) in order to disable the favicons from displaying in the tabs. Unfortuneately, there can only be one image on the tab and I'm using it to form the chevron. When the favicon was enabled, it removed the chevron and made the tab look inconsistent. Thus, since the favicon still displays in the URL bar, I feel its more important have the chevron there than a duplicate favicon.
What would you say if I replace the loading animation with the small skypilot favicon you see when you go to my site? Others???
Your other suggestions are constrained due to their change from the original design. See Mission Statement above.
Max, I'm entering this response using 1.0Final and things seem okay on this end. Send me an email giving me some more specifics and I'll see what I can determine.

I've fixed (actually, worked around) the obscure Buzilla which was causing the Sidebar Search tab to treat you browser like an anchor in Sky's nose section. I've also incorporated some enhancements I received as comments from you folks and fixed the fullscreen mode throbber-box ugliness. A full listing of all the changes can be found in the Issues List on my site, if you're interested.
I've also sent both versions to mozdev (here) for their updating but will allow installations directly at my site until mozdev has the files ready on theirs, just as with the last update.
As a reminder, my site's link is:
http://www.projectit.com/skypilot/
I regret any problems that the Sidebar Search "nose-dive" may have caused but, as I mentioned, the bug is very obscure and it took me this long to figure out an adequate work-around.
Lastly, MAX, the Search Sidebar issue may have been the cause of your problems? You may want to give it another try. If it still hangs your system, send me an email with your environment details.

But, I think some colors are not beatiful. For example, there is no color symphony seen in Mail section. One part has a color like gray(main), the other has a color like navy blue (left side), subject section is red to maroon colorized, header details has a light orange to a blury color, etc..
But I must say, the buttons are very nice, so top section is very nice :-)

This theme is gorgeous. I wish I could switch over to it permanently. However, it seems to get confused about resizing windows sometimes. Under moz 1.0 rc3, when a website pops up a new window (say, to view a publication), and you tug on the corner to make it wider, the frame gets bigger but the info inside isn't resized: the extra space stays transparent. Is this just a problem on rc3? The boring default themes don't have this problem tho'.

Sky Pilot has been updated.
While most of the changes were incorporating the new features of Mozilla 1.1b ("New Tab" and "Add Directory" buttons) and changes in the previous stylesheets, several changes were made to the Tab Bar and Personal Toolbar that will be seen in earlier versions of Mozilla and Netscape 7PR1. Refer to the Issues List on the site below for a complete description of the changes.
http://www.projectit.com/skypilot/
As in the past, both the Mozilla and Netscape new versions have been provided to mozdev.org (here); however, it may a few days before they are able to update their site. Until then, you'll need to use the above listed site in order to get the latest version.

Sky Pilot 1.8rc1 Available
ENHANCEMENTS:
All 1.x versions and NS7PR1 ---------------------------
1. Implemented SkyPilot-ish buttons and Mast to Calendar's Navbar and /styled/ its component button.
MAINTENANCE:
Latest Mozilla 1.1b builds only -------------------------------
1. Fixes /hang/ caused by Bugzilla: http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=162891
This is an /RC/ release since I'm hoping to get some feedback on the Calendar changes before finalizing.
Note: While Calendar's workspace styling is inconsistent with the general Sky Pilot purple/grey montage (it's light blue, mostly), I do *not* intend to modify Calendar's workspace components, at this time.
Lastly, I plan to wait until I finalize version 1.8 before providing it to MozDev.org. This version can be installed at:

Ohhhh, this is NICE. To "Robert" who thinks it's overdone... uninstall SkyPolit and get something else.
I love the glass "bead" in the scroll bar I love the color scheme. And it looks scrumtious matched with the brushed-metal theme I've installed on Mac OS X! (alfredkayser@nl.ibm.com). I can't say I'm crazy about Lindy up there in the throbber, but I actually like him better than the red dino (duck!)

I really hate it when my clipboard doesn't "take". The Mac OS X themes are at http://www.resexcellence.com/themes/; they are NOT at Alfred Kayes' email address :-(

The best theme for mozilla I have ever seen. All other teams look like each other with different colored buttons. This one is different. Very good job. I love it. We need more themes like this:) Cerberus

Your theme would be really awesome, except it does not work!! I had to completely strip Mozilla off my system, and after numerous failed attempts are getting the reloaded version to work, I finally found the Apps folder where all the themes are kept. After deleting those files, my system now works.
On top of that, when i did download the skin, a:the back button or none of the buttons on the top menu worked. It would not let me right click back. I think you need a lot more work before you release it to the general public.
I wonder, how many other system's has your theme screwed up? Perhaps, if it didn't work properly on your system or a friend's system, that gee, maybe it's not compatible with certain platforms!
Test your *#&$% first! Sorry your vain attempts at being a programmer didn't work, hmm, perhaps a few years in school? (or how about graduating from high school first?)
Sincerely, a pissed off user.

It works very fine! Don't know what kind of junk you have but everything is just fine for me! I have a stupid powerbook G3 with everything you can imagine installed and still got no problems in any direction! Be Well!

Sailfish, before I try it, does it work OK with Moz 1.1?
Looks great, waiting to try it.

Rick, yes it works well.
I plan to release the final 1.8 version soon, I need to integrate the NS 7.0 Final changes into it.
I'll post on a brief announcement here when its ready but, as I said, the current version from my web site should work fine with Mozilla 1.1 Final.

Sailfish - Thanks! It looks Great and loaded fine. No instabilities & saw none of the problems the September 1st troll mentioned. Good job, they should load this with the Mozilla download file.

hey Sailfish, can you make a small addition to your theme: new tab button. The problem is that all themes except SkyPiloy have New tab button Thanks

Cerberus, the New Tab button has been there since Version 1.7. However, you'll need to install it from my site since MozDev hasn't updated the theme version here since 1.6.

Cerberus, I just finished creating a Sky Pilot Icon Pack (available on my web site under "Extras") and am now finishing up the Sky Pilot Netscape 7.0PR1-to-7.0Final changes. I should announce it here within the week.
As to any other themes, I'm not currently working on one but may decide to add one sometime in the future...

Very lovely. With my Mozilla, however, the menu bar and bookmark bars aren't quite tall enough, so that there is no clear space under the letters. Same is true for the toolbar for the Mail and HTML editor functions.

Sky Pilot 1.9 Available
Below is a brief list of changes in the theme:
o added support for view filter log stylesheet introduced in Mozilla 1.2a build 20020912.
o added support for Addressbook IM button introduced in Mozilla 1.2a build 20020912.
o Netscape 7.0's Personal Toolbar Sidebar button was changed to only display if the sidebar is closed. This allows the user to gain the added space if the sidebar is opened while still being able to close the sidebar using its Close button.
o Mozilla 1.x changed message headers from non-selectable to read-only (now highlightable and copyable.) This changed the way header values were displayed in a less aesthetic manner. Added new styling to display the headers in the same manner as before.
o restyled View | Headers | All to only display a small frame but included scrollbars to access overflow fields.
o added Home Button, http://home.no.net/trihand/mozilla/home/en/ , image support.
o corrected Fullmode Back and Forward button incompatibility.
o corrected Addressbook sidebar header to be consistent with Navigator's sidebar.
