Nice, I like this one! But I think, sidebar tab headers and browser tabs are too high, they take up too much of window space. Good height for sidebar tab - height of image (I mean distance between most upper and lower dots) on the right side if it.

I just took a look at a comparison between Rain and Classic (which Rain is based on) and the tab bar strip is a few pixels wider on Rain. I will try to crop the new-tab and close-tab buttons so that they will take up less space.

Using it with Moz. 1.4. The only problem I've spotted (just installed this evening) is that, at least in pictures-only mode, the reload button gets a bit narrower when I mouse over it.

I agree that the tabs could be a pixel or two shorter, but then I think that about the Classic theme too. :)

@19, 20
Alex, thanks for the screenshots. That really is weird that the scrollbars act up as they do in the images. I don't know what could be causing the problem. Did you have the problem at all with Mozilla 1.3? That's the classic.jar file that I used to make Rain. Honestly, I don't think that would be a problem, since lots of themes aren't made specifically for Mozilla 1.4 -- the theme version in the contents.rdf file states that it works with Mozilla versions 1.2 and above, as most do. So I really don't know about it.... If I can think of anything, or if someone else does, please post it here. Maybe if you have some web space, could you post the images to a website and then post the problem on the Mozillazine themes forum? Thanks.

I don't have any webspace (yet). I'm working on that.
I never tried it with Moz 1.3, because I had been using camino/chimera since march and just recently switched back.
Eariler today, I tried a bunch of themes and found a couple the same scrollbar effect of starting out as a white bar then turning (and staying) grey as you scroll down.
One of them was called 'MacHall'. I don't know the name of the author or the name of the other theme. Deskmod seems to be out of action at the moment. I'll post again when I find out.

I did try Rain on 1.3.1. The good news is that it works fine. Hence, the problems are probably with tme Mac implementation of 1.4, not with Rain.

So it really looks great. I hope to have it up here this weekend at the latest. All I have to do is get a new icon for the aol im working (gonna look at how CDN did it on the orbit theme to figure that out) and then I'm done!

PalikariATL -- I have the updates done. But here's the thing. In the past, I left the aol window unskinned, except for the taskbar. That is how I have it now too. The reason I left it this way is because I think that the AOL IM should have a consistent feel, because people will be expecting a certain look from it. Do you agree with me? It would probaby take a while to get the AOL IM window skinned to a way that I would like. I would like to get the themes (both the Mozilla version and Netscape version) up on here pretty soon. PalikariATL, both the updated Mozilla 1.4 and Netscape 7.1 files are ready to go. All I'm waiting on is getting them up here. If you've installed the theme installer add-on listed on the right side of the page as #5 then you can manually install it. Let's hope that the link works :) If so, then you can save the jar file to your hard drive then use the theme installer add-on to install it!

That's wierd that you're experiencing that problem. Have you seen it with any other themes? In case the file was corrupted, I re-uploaded it to the site as of 3:30pm central time August 9. If you save it to your hard drive, and right-click on the file (rain_ns.jar) then it should say:
Size: 597 KB (612,343 bytes)
Size on disk 600 KB (614,400 bytes)

At least, that is what it says on mine before I uploaded it to my webspace.

I have installed it myself on Netscape 7.1 without any problems.... Don't know what the cause might be...

First, great theme! Very clean. I have a couple of quirks to list though (I'm using the latest Rain theme, downloaded on Aug 9).

Browser:
* The reload button appears to be 1 pixel off when you mouse over it. i.e. when I mouse over it, the border appears, but the stop and Address bar shift left 1 or 2 pixels. This only happens when you view the toolbars with _pictures only_. It doesn't happen if you have pictures and text.

Mail:
* When I get new mail, there aren't any indicators on which folders had the new mail downloaded to them. I have to hunt around in my various folders to find the new mail. e.g. with Orbit, when new mail arrives, I get a green arrow overlayed on the various folders which had new mail downloaded to them (new mail might go into various folders due to filters.)

1) Install Theme Installer Add-On first:

2) Download the test version of Rain:

(You can rename it to rain.jar after downloading it)
3) Go from the toolbar of Mozilla to Edit -> Preferences -> Appearance -> Themes
4) Press Install jar theme
5) Choose the Rain file from the folder where you downloaded it
6) Restart your Mozilla
7) Welcome to Rain!

Thanks to geshem for the detailed instructions. We were able to load the 1.5b test rain.JAR file and it works. Thanks.

Now a suggestion to the owner of the theme - as you create an official 1.5b update, can you consider making the tabs naybe 30% smaller vertically? As they are, they take up a lot or screen real estate that I would rather leave for the active window. This is a general suggestion to all themes. The one that (to our eye) gets it perfect is Pinball.

An alternative is tell us how to hack theme(s) to affect the tab size or allow vertical tab size to be set in Preferences.

In what instances do you see this? I am running Mozilla 1.4 on Windows XP Pro. In both windowed and full screen mode, I don't see the url bar or throbber shifting any. I know in a previous version of this theme, the reload button was messed up in full screen mode which made things shift to the right a few pixels, but that has been fixed. Thanks to your reply.
It seems that the above-mentioned shifting occurs on the pictures-only mode in toolbar options. The picture-and-text mode has no problem, but on the text-only mode bars slide as well as pictures-only.
My system is Mozilla 1.2/Linux-2.4. Rain is the latist version, and no reload button shifting.

Some problems on Mozilla 1.5b / MacOs X :
- scrollbars never appear (blank stuff instead)
- content of frames sometimes are not shown (!)

Very nice theme otherwise.

This is a known bug with Rain (sort of). I built Rain by using Classic as a base -- and apparantly Classic has that bug, and it got into Rain too. Another user confirmed this for me with Classic & Rain on a Mac.

@57
I don't know as of yet how to support enigmail, but I put out a post on the Mozillazine forums. So if anyone responds out there with instructions then I'll be happy to add enigmail support for you.

Hi. Great theme, however on my system (Mozilla 1.4r3 Gentoo i686) it appears to crash the Javascript debugger as it attempts to load. It opens the window for the debugger but never draws anything inside it. Is this a known issue, or is it just my system being dodgy? The debugger works fine with the other themes I have installed.

Hi, I updated the Mozilla 1.5 version of Rain. You may find the jar file at This only pertains to the Mozilla 1.5 version of the theme -- noticed a bug of sorts: there were 3 new buttons in the formatting toolbar that I didn't account for, which caused some ugly results. That's all fixed now, so everything looks good. I contacted the themes.mozdev.org crew to have it updated. For now, please download from the site above, and I will post here when it is uploaded.

I really appreciate your input, thanks for letting me know about the junk icon not showing. Here's what I did: I made the junk icon into a trash can, just like the trash icon. That sound good?

This isn't a beta per se. I guess more like a work in progress... I thought I was finished, then found out they added 3 icons to the composer toolbar, and fixed that. Then you let me know about the junk icon, so I fixed that. Basically it's just little fixes, not a beta. Does that make sense to anyone but me? hehe. The file isn't up here at themes.mozdev.org yet... I'll need to get in touch with them and let them know of yet antother update. It was easier the way deskmod.com allowed me to do updates myself and not have to bother them all the time. hehe They're probably tired of hearing from me.

I do not have anything defining the tabs in userchrome.css. In fact, when I remove the userchrome.css (and usercontent.css, for what's that worth), the problem still occurs.

I'm using Windows XP SP1. The problem only started occuring when I did a clean install of XP. It did not occur on my old XP setup.

Also, the problem only seems to occur with the Rain theme. The tabs for the Classic and Modern theme are normal.

The problem is unusual indeed. But since it's nothing more than a minor eyesore, I can live with it for now. I'll be upgrading to Mozilla 1.5 when the final version comes out, so I'll let you know if I continue to have the same problem then.

Thanks.

OK. Here is a list of the problems I've seen on the latest rain.jar from your website:
* The "Squished" tab bar and open/close tab buttons discussed above.

* Clicking the down arrow in the location bar only shows the location list. It doesn't hide it. I should be able to toggle the dropdown list by clicking on the arrow.

* When typing in the location bar, the type ahead drop down is now a solid color (what ever my background color is). If the site I want is in the list I down arrow to it, but none of the items in the list are highlighted, i.e. I can't tell where I am. The only item in the list that gets highlighted is the search entry at the bottom. This is probably the biggest problem.

Those are the problems I've run into so far. Great theme though. Keep it up!

Thanks for checking that out for me on Linux. So you're still seeing squished tabs huh? Wierd... I've tested Rain out on several computers at school here and don't see this behavior at all... I do notice that the cookie notification icon is gone. I might back the rounded toolbars out since people seem to be having problems with them... Looks like my work isn't over, I'll try to fix up Rain soon. I'll post here when it's been updated. Who knows -- maybe I could have dual versions: square url bar and round url bar? Would people like that? I'd like some opinions...

FYI, it turns out the toggling of the URL list problem I mentioned is Mozilla bug, not yours. It's fixed in 1.4.1 and 1.5rc1, but happens in 1.4.
See:

As for the squished tabs, I have one machine which is using a rain.jar file dated 08-11-03 which does not have the problem. The latest rain*.jar files do have this problem (happens every time even after removing the old rain.jar file, deleting the chrome.rdf file and reinstalling).

As for a rounded or square location bar, how about a userChrome.css option? I like the rounded URL bar myself.

My only GUI complaint is that the drop down arrows for buttons are placed too far from their associated buttons (back, forward, print). They look like they go with the button to the right of them.

Keep up the good work. Thanks for the prompt responses.

I fixed the cookie icon, and am still looking into the tab-strip squishing icons (I don't see it still). And a subskin method to allow you to choose if you want the square or rounded url bar is almost done. Currently, it defaults to square, and then you can use the usercontent file to get the round one. The only bug is that the site icon (to the immediate left of the site address) is jagged looking on the round version. Stay tuned!

No to be picky, but while your working... :-)

The Search button is 1 pixel taller than all the other toolbar button images causing it to no line up properly.

* When you have "pictures only" selected, the Search button top 1 pixel higher than the Print (and other) buttons. (but lined up along the bottom)
* When you have "pictures and text" selected, Search button bottom is 1 pixel below the Print button (but lined up along the top).

Rain is a very impressive theme in spite of minor glitches here and there, which hopefully will be solved soon. Even more impressive is the energy the themer, Aaron Spuler, has been investing in making it better (and better), paying attention to every comment he receives from its users. Thank you, Aaron!

List of issues fixed:
*New search button
*Search & Go buttons line up with all others in pictures & text mode and in pictures-only mode.
*In text-only mode, they are off by 1 pixel....... working on that still

*site icon no longer jagged on round url bar

Note: the updated jar files are not on the server yet -- I'm still polishing them. Want to fix that 1px issue on text-only mode, and also there is a small issue with textboxes on round url bar when using the userchrome method to get subskins. Bear with me here...

Default behavior of the theme is to have square url bar.

1. Round url bar
2. Fatter tabs for those that have issues with skinnier ones.
3. Smaller status-bar icons for those that requested it in the past.

Oof!

The reload hover resize bug is gone, but now, using Moz. 1.4, pictures only:

1. The URL is too small. Any way to have it obey the minimum font size pref, or whatever system pref is appropriate? The visually impared (and folks with wonky monitors like me) will appreciate it. As it is, I think I'm going to have to switch to Classic if I can't revert to a pre-tiny URL rain until this is fixed.

2. The tabs are a bit too short. Descenders dip into the lower highlight of non-focused tabs.

3. Tab icons are squished vertically, as are the new tab and close tab buttons.

4. An old peeve I haven't mentioned before 'cause it's not a big deal, but while I'm at it: I'd like to see more at-a-glance distinctive icons for bookmarks, bookmark folders, & bookmark groups.

Thanks!

Quite good, I think I'll be using it for a while. I enjoy the look of the buttons, and the interface is rather clean. However, you may wish to differentiate the "new tab" and the "close tab" buttons, (they look identical) and the application buttons at the bottom add a bit too much space to the lower toolbar.

Very nice, I like this theme a lot. The buttons are nicer than the ones from the normal classic theme, but it still works with system colors, so everything matches perfectly with dark Windows XP theme I'm using currently. Very glad to see it's available for Netscape 7.1, since that's what I use for the most part. (I really like Netscape Mail's integration with my @netscape.net email address) Also really like that customized Netscape icon in the top right corner, which is like an improved version of the one from the old Communicator. Besides that I always liked that old one better, this one goes much better with the theme than the Netscape 7.1 icon does in the Classic theme. (no jagged edges here)

And as other OS X users, i've 2 problems : see comment 123
You asked if there is the same ruler problem with "Classic" theme. Answer is no : classic use OS X aqua ruler but every other theme I tried based on it got the same bug as "Rain". Moreover, "Modern" and "Gray Modern" are working well, as all "Modern" based themes.

Thank you for your help.

Hi everybody

I've never like posted to one of these thingies before or anything. But when I use this theme which I just installed today, all the scroll bar thingies disappear. And not just the major ones on the right and bottom edges of the window, but even the little ones like when I go into preferences and want to change back to a theme that does have scroll bars, the scroll bar that's meant to be there is gone too.

I've been reading all the other posts to see if other people have this issue too and it seems I'm not alone in my problem which is good. I'm using Netscape 7.1 and OSX 10.2.6. And I tried this other theme called Smoke which also looked totally cute but it has the same disappearing scroll bar thing.

Can anybody help me? I really liked this theme.

The option arrows (the little down arrowheads to the right of the back, forward, and print buttons) are now in very oversized button areas, the arrorwheads disappear when the mouse hovers over them, and the arrowheads are mis-positioned within their button areas.

Can you reproduce what I am seeing? Is there some setting/configuration file on my system that would affect this (I did do an uninstall of 1.6 before installing 1.7rc1 on this XP system; got the same effect on another NT system)?

To be sure, this is my favorite theme, and I do appreciate the work you have put into it.

Aaron. Thanks for the nice theme. I really like how the padlock becomes visible when visiting an encrypted page instead of just locking.

One more headache: When the drop down menues partially cover an icon, they erase that portion of the icon. You can restore the icon by passing your cursor over it. For example, if at the New York Times site, The drop down menu of the window menu will take out part of the go button. A longer name once took out part of the search button but left the go button since it was completely covered. developer.netscape.com/docs.manuals will take out the icons on the personal tool bar. This is on the updated version for 1.7. I got rain for the first time yesterday (and Mozilla last week) and am very happy with both.

By the way, what IS the icon to the right of the search button? What is it a picture of?
